New Hepatitis C Treatment - Week 6: Hepatitis C Survivor Story
This weeks video update (Shot on November 24th 2012) features an interview with Brent Saunders who is a family friend of Devon’s and Hepatitis C survivor.
Brent Saunders had a blood plasma treatment in 1986 to treat an autoimmune disorder he had. He later found out that the plasma he was transfused with was infected with Hepatitis C.
For decades the Arkansas prison system allegedly profited from selling blood plasma from inmates infected with viral hepatitis. This was a prison blood harvesting scheme run by prisoners to earn them an income. The blood was then sold by blood companies for millions of dollars. The Canadian Red Cross plead guilty to criminal charges related to distributing tainted blood products and infecting Canadians with HIV and hepatitis C. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police blood task force has an ongoing investigation into the Arkansas sells.
Despite having to stop his first treatment early to do complications Brent’s was able to make it through the complete second Hepatitis C treatment which was successful. He is now cured of the disease. He has a wife and two children. His wife never contracted the disease as it has not been proven to be passed through sex. His family is very happy their father is healthy again!
