The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all people with chronic liver disease be vaccinated against hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis B (HBV) if they are not already immune. Coinfection with hepatitis A or B can lead to severe liver disease in people who already have another form of hepatitis. The hepatitis A vaccine consists of two doses within a six-month period. The hepatitis B vaccine is given in two doses over a month. Both vaccines are considered safe and effective. A combination HAV/HBV vaccine is also available.
Be sure you are up to date on all immunizations. In addition to the recommended vaccines for adults, flu shots are recommended for patients with liver disease.
