Nearly 10 percent of men in the United Kingdom who have injected themselves with anabolic steroids or tanning drugs have been exposed to HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV), according to a study by Public Health England (PHE) and reported by The Australian. Studying 395 men who use such drugs, researchers from PHE and Liverpool John Moores University found that one in 18 had been exposed to hep C, one in 11 had been exposed to hep B, and one in 65 had HIV. The survey also found that only 20 percent of these men said they regularly used condoms when having sex in the last year. The number of men who use injectable performance-enhancing or image-altering drugs has rapidly grown since the 1990s. Currently, anabolic steroid users are the biggest client group at many U.K. needle and syringe exchanges.
