Kentucky now ranks as the state with the highest number of hepatitis C cases in the United States, with new infections occurring primarily among young people, Wave 3 reports. Federal officials have called the state’s increase in new cases an “emerging epidemic” driven by injection drug use, specifically heroin. Nearly 4 million people nationwide are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Since 2007, more people across the country have died of hep C than from HIV.
