Andre L. LaFrance, an intravenous drug user with hepatitis C, was charged with attempted second-degree murder for spitting on an emergency-room nurse in Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reports. The charge was reduced to third-degree assault, a felony. The state epidemiologist said the risk of spreading the virus by saliva to another person through his or her eyes “is extremely low.” LaFrance also faces a harassment charge and a misdemeanor assault charge.
